When we first considered performing foundation repair, Kansas City was a town we felt had potential to supply us work. The old houses located at the north-east area of the city had 40 year old foundations and many needed repair. The areas of Brookside, Waldo, and Ruskin Heights all had potential as well.
Sadly, Dad passed in 1989 and never participated much with foundation repair. I took over the business and the first year was rough. While performing house moving as well as foundation repair, Missouri continued to offer additional opportunities for work. Lees Summit, Blue Springs, Raytown and others all had houses in need of foundation repair. We became specialized in doing foundation replacement. Houses were lifted and foundations replaced. During the early days of foundation repair, Kansas City building codes had to be learned and understood. Other cities had code requirements as well. This knowledge is part of the job.
The house and foundation pictured above are located in the historical district of Independence, MO. near Harry Truman's historical home. This house was tough to move because the building design was ''balloon construction'', The walls were built right on the foundation and the floor constructed between. When I recall the beginnings of working foundation repair, Missouri had lots of houses with balloon construction. All these type of houses generally are over 50 years old. We repaired and replaced foundations one at a time and tried not to hurry. However, there was one job that had to be done quickly. 79 houses moved in 60 days...down the Missouri river.
