In the 1980's, the RLDS church in Independence,Missouri planned construction of their new, towering spiral temple. Two one room brick school houses stood in the way. The church chose to relocate these buildings as historical sites. Now firmly in the business of house moving, Missouri was not to far from our Shawnee, Kansas home. Although we had never moved a brick structure before, we decided to take on the job.
I remember being impressed as Dad's house moving mentor, Bill Pixley, showed us a skill specifically used for brick structures. Bill demonstrated the technique called ''cross-timbering''.
While house moving, Kansas City was where Dad first met Bill. They met while working different projects near the old Paseo high school. The picture below shows Bill, his family, and myself as a young man. Bill was our good friend.
As we worked together over the years house moving, Kansas City was growing all the time. Together we moved close to one hundred houses in the 1980's. Land was constantly being rezoned and houses were in the way of progress. Highway 291 in Missouri was widened and eminent domain laws presented numerous houses to recycle and relocate. Although we kept busy house moving, Missouri and Kansas offered a different line of work we were interested in... foundation repair.
